FOR Grandma it was every day she chose one when she dressed.
The strings were tied and freshly washed and always neatly pressed.
A SIMPLE apron is what it was.
You might never think about the things she used it for that made it look worn out.
SHE used it for a basket when she gathered up the eggs
and flapped it as a weapon when the hens pecked at her legs.
SHE used it to carry kindling when she stoked the kitchen fire
And to hold a load of laundry and to wipe a clothesline wire.
SHE used it as a hot pad to pick up a steaming pan
And when her brow was heated, she used it as a fan.
IT dried our childish tears when we'd scrape a knee and cry
And it made a special hiding place when a little one was shy.
FARM produce picked in season; summer, spring and fall
Found its way into the kitchen in Grandma's carryall.
WHEN
Grandma passed away her reward a peaceful rest
I'm sure she wore the apron that was her Sunday best.
